Unfortunately, we have all received advice that we simply did not ask for. In my personal experience, people always seem so intrigued to share words of wisdom with me and give me advice that, with time and maturity, I have found to be completely useless. Allow me to share with you some and give you my unwanted advice.
“Follow your passion.” This advice was given to me by one of my friends’ moms when we were sitting at the dinner table eating some spaghetti. The words sound smart and great, but it automatically assumes that I was born with a passion. Well, shit, I was not. I guess I’m screwed – well, not really, developing a passion is what it is all about, not following something that does not exist.
“Live each day as if it were your last.” If this was my last day on earth, do you think I would be sitting down with a ginger tea writing this article? Also, if everybody thought this way, nothing would ever be done. So, what is the point of this advice?
“Everything happens for a reason.” No, Jenny, you failed your test because you did not study.
“You’ll like it when you are older.” No, Mom, mushrooms are still disgusting.
“You will find it when you are not looking.” So do I or do I not look for my lost earrings?
“Don’t go to bed angry.” Well, sorry, but I need space to process the conflict. Sometimes, I am literally arguing because I am tired and sleepy, so yes, let me go to bed.
“If you don’t like where you are, move. You are not a tree.” What the fuck does this even mean.
“Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Sure.
“Be a man.” No, thank you.
